  • What are the key or repeating words?
  • Are any comparisons or contrasts made in the passage?
  • How would you explain the progression of thought?
  • In the points the text is making, are there any cause/effect ideas?

Interpretation—what does it mean?

  • What is the text talking about? What’s the main point?
  • What is being said about that main point?

Principles—what truths are here?

  • What are the timeless and eternal truths from the passage?

Application—so what?

  • Is there a  new thought to ponder?
  • What is there to be thankful for?
  • Does this text suggest a change that is needed in my life?
  • What example do I need to follow?
